Fear can really hurt us
it's fear that breaks our hearts
it's fear that drives us downward
and leaves us in the dark

The fear is within us though
the fear of who we are
how we hurt ourselves
when we take life way too far

So tell me how I stop
and overcome the fear
show myself respect
teach myself to care

How to guard my heart
from my reckless sense of need
protect myself from me
to this I will conceed

It's hard to step away
from my independence
I just don't want to break

I'd see it as a weakness
it symbolizes all
that I can't take

Maybe it's the true weakness
the way I cling to "alone"

What if I wake up one day
and everyone is gone

Don't get mad when I don't call
It's not that I don't care
It's not that at all

I've run this course
I've tried this all before
Only to watch them leave
And here the slamming of a door

So why am I so scared
of what's gone on before
Why don't I just walk on over
And open up that door

Maybe I'm just waiting
Waiting for a sign
looking for the promise
that you'll only be mine

Scared to call you
scared to say
all of the things
on my mind today

What is this word
and why does it seem
to permeate
my very being

Scared of your reaction
scared you'll turn away
and I won't be able to tell you
about my thoughts today

Why am I so scared
what are you going to say
to crush my heart
why is it so important anyway

Scared of saying "us"
scared to death of what might be
scared to hear the truth
about what you might see

But how long will I wait
to have you for my own
maybe therein lies the beauty
the beauty of unknown
